Response to:"Immigrants in our own land"

Personally i like this poem a lot, it tells the truth about immigrants. I consider myself an immigrant and that doesn't make me feel embarrassed. Being an immigrant makes me feel really proud, we are the ones who do the toughest jobs in this country. The problem is that we don't even get basic things such as respect. Personally i can say that in our school there is a lot of racist people that think that just because they are popular they can make fun of us. They make fun of us and use word like "beaners, paisas and other offensive terms. This has caused my friends and i a lot of conflicts, but at the end all this popular people are cowards. When we face them they say "I'm sorry." That's when I ask myself aren't these guy's the ones who will beat up anyone who steps up and face them? I don't know if they really mean "I'm sorry" or they just say that because they see themselves in trouble. This problems used to happened to my friends and i years ago. Today they know that if they say something like that to us things will not end up good. I don't justify violence, but when someone talks bad things about your race, culture, traditions i stand up and defend what i believe in. I think this poem reflects what is going on in our society. Also it can make us think how much damage racism causes to victims it doesn't matter if we are Hispanics, Blacks, Whites, or Asians, at the end we are all humans that deserve to be treated with respect.

Poem

For once I don't want a steaming cup of coffee and hear the clomp clomp of my boss' high heels for once in my life I want to be taken away to the rivers and mountains on my four wheels where the birds chirp all day long and the whole place is carpeted with green where fresh milk and curd comes from the cows and no technology can be heard or seen just the clouds, the river, the mountains and the sun and at night beneath the countless stars I shall sleep in the morning the sun will kiss my face I will belong to a place where no one but silence speaks so take me away to the mountains today for inside these four walls I can no longer stay.

I would like to point out when the author says "no technology can be heard". Today technology is making us ignore nature. We forgot to value nature.

Thoughts on today's class

Today we learned that poetry is something special in american literature. Poetry is also used to express feelings and ideas humans have. In a few words poetry is an essential part of literature when it comes to express thoughts.
