Chapter 3: Holden talks about he has read which mean something:
-out of Africa means, he will leave.
- the return of the native means, that he will return.
-human bondage means, the way he talks.

Chapter 4: Holden starts to criticize Stradlater and also to compare him with Ackley. Holden didn't just to that before this chapters. This can show that his attitude is changing he beginning to be different.
Chapter 5: Holden and Mal decide to go to the movies. Holden didn't just to this before, which also shows he is changing. The fact they invited Ackley can tell us that he being more friendly now.
Chapter 7: After fighting with Stradlaer Holden decides to go and talk with Ackley. Holden is doing the same Ackley does to everyone he is invading his space. Another point is that probably he sees Ackley more as a friend.
Chapter 8: Holden meets Ernest's mom, and he describes her as a good lady. Later on they start talking about Ernest even though Holden doesn't like him he talks good things about him just because he likes his mother. He wants to give her a good impression of her son. Holden also says a lot of lies about himself which proves that when he starts lying he can't stop.
Chapter 13: Holden walks back to the Hotel. They have stolen his gloves he is mad but he knows that he wouldn't done anything about it if he knew the person who stole them. He wants to prove to himself that he is not a coward when someone tells him they will introduce a prostitute to him accepts. However later he refuses to have fun with the prostitute even though she wants to. He lies to her, which shows he is still a liar, and just pays her so she can leave him alone.
