Response to:"Immigrants in our own land"
Personally i like this poem a lot, it tells the truth about immigrants. I consider myself an immigrant and that doesn't make me feel embarrassed. Being an immigrant makes me feel really proud, we are the ones who do the toughest jobs in this country. The problem is that we don't even get basic things such as respect. Personally i can say that in our school there is a lot of racist people that think that just because they are popular they can make fun of us. They make fun of us and use word like "beaners, paisas and other offensive terms. This has caused my friends and i a lot of conflicts, but at the end all this popular people are cowards. When we face them they say "I'm sorry." That's when I ask myself aren't these guy's the ones who will beat up anyone who steps up and face them? I don't know if they really mean "I'm sorry" or they just say that because they see themselves in trouble. This problems used to happened to my friends and i years ago. Today they know that if they say something like that to us things will not end up good. I don't justify violence, but when someone talks bad things about your race, culture, traditions i stand up and defend what i believe in. I think this poem reflects what is going on in our society. Also it can make us think how much damage racism causes to victims it doesn't matter if we are Hispanics, Blacks, Whites, or Asians, at the end we are all humans that deserve to be treated with respect.
