Self-determination theory

My master piece topic is about racism. The way I can apply SDT is in two different ways. The first way is that some people feel motivated to be racist. An example of this is the Ku Kux Klan group they promote racist ideology. By motivating people to be racist we just create a huge problem that shouldn't exist. Another way is that people feel motivated to promote anti-racism ideology. This is something that will bring a positive outcome. We are free to choose in which side we want to be we can be part of something negative that only brings problems or we can part of a change that looks for respect and tolerance towards others. It doesn't matter what's your race or ethnicity, the language you speak, your traditions, what it matters is that we are all equal.

Brave New World essay (topic exile)

In the novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley we can find interesting characters. Such characters are Bernard Marx and John the savage. These two characters experience exile and they have alienating and enriching experiences. These two guys are different from every single person in the World State.

In the World State humans don’t know how it feels to have feelings like love, sadness, happiness and many others. Humans consume a drug called soma this drug is use by the government to control its population. Soma sedates, calms, and most importantly distracts people form realizing that something is wrong in the world they live in.  Also reading books and self thinking are prohibited. People in the World State don’t know what having a family means. The government is behind everything they basically have their citizens enslaved.  Fortunately not everyone in the world state lives enslaved there are a few people who are different. Those different people are Bernard Marx and John the savage.

Bernard Marx belongs to the group of the alphas. Many others we think he is different just because of his inferior physical structure. There are a few things that make him different from everyone else. Bernard doesn’t consume soma because he wants to be able to feel. He also spends most of his time self thinking by himself. These actions put him at risk of losing his job. Not only that also a bigger risk which is being exiled to Iceland. However he is trap in the middle at some point he wants to be different but on the other side society pressures him. By being different he is not accepted by others, he is also seeing as someone weird by everybody. He has an internal conflict with himself that makes him feel exiled from the rest of the people, but also with himself because he knows he can’t be the person he wants to be.

                John the savage was born in the savage reservation of New Mexico. He is the son of the director and Linda and he grew up in the reservation.  When he meets Lenina and John they offer him the opportunity of returning to society. He seems excited because he will have the opportunity of integrating to society.  When he is in London he sees that the society is not what he expected.  Quickly he discovers he doesn’t fit in the World State.  He was also rejected by the Indians in the savage reserve. We know this because he wasn’t allowed to participate in the ritual the Indians were doing when Lenina and Bernard were at the reserve. John is tremendously influenced by William Shakespeare he read some of his literature this will cause him trouble in the World State. John was exiled twice the first time was when he lived in the reservation the Indians rejected him. The second occurs when he returns to society he and is not accepted for not obeying the World State laws.

                Both Bernard and John have something in common they experienced what being exiled feels. Both were not accepted by society for being different.  John was not going to change his beliefs he was going to defend them. Bernard was in the middle he was confused he didn’t know if was going to be himself, or just like everyone else just to fit in.

Langston Hughes wrote in several literary genres. However even though he wrote plays, novels, and stories he is best known for his poems. When it comes to poetry Hughes is someone who everyone knows for his great poems. Some his poems have freedom and race as the central theme.

Hughes was one of the earliest innovators of the then new literary art form jazz poetry. He was also known for his work during the Harlem Renaissance. Hoping to escape racism Hughes father moved to Cuba and later on Mexico.  During the 1800’s and 1900’s is known that African American suffered discrimination. This might had influenced Hughes when he wrote some of his poems. We all can agree that he felt proud of being African American. One of his popular poems that present racism and pride is “You and your whole race”. Probably Hughes used this poem to criticized society for being ignorant and being racist towards other humans. Langston Hughes definitely wanted freedom for his people that is the message you can find in his poems.        

There is a connection between racism and freedom. When someone is discriminated they don’t feel free. That’s why freedom was an important thing that motivated Hughes to write poems. One of the poems where Hughes talks about freedom is “Democracy”. In this poem Hughes gives us the message that we need freedom because freedom is something necessary for humans. He concludes saying “I want freedom just as you.” This proves he wasn’t someone selfish who only thought in himself he wanted good things for everyone.

Langston Hughes is definitely someone who left us a legacy of poetry. Using his poems as social critics he showed he was against racism. He also used them to tell his readers that freedom is necessary in their lives. His poems will motivate us to give something positive to our society and express our ideas and thoughts.

B: 

"Freedom is a strong seed planted in a great need."  Hughes compares freedom with a seed planted a great need, This means that freedom is something essential that we must have.

"I want freedom just as you." Hughes is not being selfish. He talks directly to the readers and lets them know that everyone wants freedom.

"Life is for the living death is for the dead." Hughes tells us to enjoy life when we are alive. He also lets us know that once we are dead we are only dead.

"The past has been a mint of blood and sorrow. That must not be true of tomorrow." This is a perfect example of how the words rhyme. His message is to prevent negative things that can affect our future.

"I do not need my freedom when I'm dead. I cannot live on tomorrow's  bread." In this quote he argues that freedom is essential. He does it by saying that freedom is necessary when you are alive not when you are dead.

A: -I am African American -I am a poet-I am part of the Harlem Renaissance-I am someone humble-I am someone who has overcome obstacles.
B: Langston Hughes  was an amazing poet he was also probably the first rapper in america. When he was a child his life wasn't easy. His parents separated and he had to move to live with her grandma he live in a lot of cities until they settle in Cleveland ,Ohio.  This shows he was someone who had a  hard time through out his life. He is seeing as someone humble, his poetry was admired by many people. He is seeing as a contributor of the Harlem Renaissance.

Brave new world chapter 5

Henry and Lenina fly in a helicopter over a crematorium where phosphorus is collected from burning bodies and then used as fertilizer. Then both of them start to consume a lot of soma. Bernard is at the Fordson community Singery. Everyone in that place starts to comsume soma and start doing things that make Bernard feel isolated.

Brave new world chapter 4 notes

Lenina tells Bernard that she accepts his invitation to go to the savage reserve, which makes Bernard feel embarrassed because she told him in front of coworkers. Bernard betrays his insecurity about his size. The lower castes associate larger size with higher status so he has trouble getting others to follow his orders. Bernard goes to visit his friend Helmholtz Watson who works as a lecturer at the college of emotional engineering. 

Brave new world chapter 3

1. Children play naked. Their childhood goes away quickly because they make them do things teenagers do.
2. Is described as a world where a few get to controlled what others can or can not do.
3. The controllers control everything in society and because they don't want consumption to increase.
4. Strong emotions are seeing like old fashioned things that can make someone weak.
5. Sexuality is used like a tool to show that society has changed over time and has been more modernist.
6. Mustapha Mond is the world controller of western Europe. It seems like he wants to promote the ideas of the society described in the book.
7.  Both seem to be abnormal. Bernard doesn't have a good reputation because he thinks by himself. In the world state society Lenina is weird because she only focus on dating one man for months.
8. He doesn't concentrate on one scene for instants Mustapha is talking that Bernard and Henry, and Lenina and Fanny all this conversation occur in different places.
9. Soma is a drug the world state uses to control and basically keep their citizens enslaved. It distracts people and doesn't let them realize something is wrong.
10. People look young until they reach the age of sixty years old.

Modern writing

Five years ago the way we wrote was similar to how we do it today. Each day things in the world change this can definitely affect the way we write. There are several factors that influence the way we write. Some examples could be news, articles, essays, and others.Today we have a lot of problems (police brutality, terrorism, economy, and education.) When we write i'ts a way of expressing how we feel about those problems, by writing we can criticize,like, and make suggestions about important things that affect us everyday.

He was probably the first rapper in america. I checked out some of his poems and they look nice. His poem "open letter to the south" is the one i liked more. In some way he was giving hope of having a better future.

Spring break work

                Sorting multi-colored beads in a warehouse until my battery dies is something I can’t accept, because I’m a human.  As every other human I have something that proves I’m fully human and that’s my emotions, feelings, and intelligence. Every human wants opportunities to become successful or master certain skills or just be good at something. To achieve those things other humans and I need education, scholarships, and job opportunities.

                By nature like any other human I have feelings and emotions.  One of them is motivation I feel motivated to do something more than sort multi colored beads in a warehouse, motivation is what brings me hope of become someone important one day. Motivation played an important role in “Ready Player One” by Ernest Cline. Just as Wade the main character of this story was motivated to find Halliday’s Easter egg. He wanted to find the egg because that meant and opportunity for him because finding the egg will give him Halliday’s fortune and hope for a better life. If we appeal to statistics rich people are eight times likelier to graduate than poor. That’s the reason why I feel motivated I want to change that, but without scholarships or job opportunities it will be impossible. Intelligence is something that can make us see a difference between humans and machines. Having good grades proves I’m intelligent it proves I’m worth something important.  Wade was also intelligent he was the first one who found a clue that could take him to Halliday’s Easter egg, for about five long years no one ever found a clue Wade was the first one who did it. He also watched 180 episodes of a popular series of the 1980’s (family ties) because he thought it could give him clues since it was one of Halliday’s favorites. When I’m homework or projects I do the same thing I do research.  

                Another interesting thing about Wade is that he questions the existence of god which means he doesn’t believe in any religion. If I would be a machine I wouldn’t care about religion. I’m different than Wade because I’m a religious person. If we appeal to popularity most humans have a religion and I fit in that group. Humans are friendly by nature we don’t like to feel lonely that’s why we do things like going to the movies with friends, play sports, videogames, study, go to school, etc. I am someone who likes to spend time with friends and get involved in activities that make me meet new people. Wade is a perfect example when we talk about friendship has a friend (Aech) although they don’t know each other in person they have become great friends because they spend a lot of time together searching for the Easter eeg. Every human has a hobby something the liked to do because they enjoy it. Personally I enjoy playing sports and listening to music. Robots and machines can do anything like that because they are assigned to do certain tasks.  If we appeal to the public I’m sure they will understand that I am a human, because I have gave proves that prove I’m human.

                The science fiction world of Ready Player can’t be compared with the world where we live today. However it gives us great examples of what makes someone human. Feelings, emotions, intelligence are things that make me worth something. Every human has the right to get a better education, scholarships, jobs and anything that will help them improve and be better persons. That’s why I have hope that I’ll be recognize as a fully human.

Police brutality & fallacies

1." If the police told me to do something, I'd just do it that's why I'd still be alive." Whether or not you did what police officers told you to do or not, if you are white,  your more than likely do not have to fear for your life when interacting with the police.( Argument to to antiquity or tradition) I picked this one because is true it's like a tradition or something cops often do they act more violent when they see Hispanics or African Americans.

2." Let the police do their job." The job of the police is to serve and protect the people of the public- which include African American and other minorities. (Argument or appeal to the public) I picked this one  because is obvious that the job of the police is to protect everyone no matter what is their race or ethnicity. I'm sure most of the people will agree that the police has the duty to protect everyone.

3." Not all police are bad." It can also be argued that not all white people supported slavery or Jim Crow- many didn't. (Argument or appeal to numbers) A lot of people can argue that not all the cops are bad . However there are still cops who do mistakes in their job. Not because a lot of people argue that" not all police are bad" it doesn't mean there are not bad police out there.

4. "If you don't like the police, don't call them when you need help." In many black and minority communities, call for help from the police are often left unanswered. (Argument or appeal to pity) This matches good because if the police doesn't help minorities how can they expect a good relationship with them?

5. "Until we get both sides of the story we don,t know what really happened" One side of the story will forever be absent from the conversation surrounding police brutality: the side of the story from the victims who were murder. (Argument to logic) I think is true if you don't have all the information of what happened. The victim dies which means you won't have his version of what happened. Is logical to believe that that in order to know what happened you also need the version of the victim (person who was murder) however that's impossible.

Fallacies

1. Argumentum ad hominem: I believe that in an argument you don't have to attack the person i believe you have to attack their ideas.

2. Argumentum ad ignorantiam: Not because something hasn't been proven false means that is true/

3. Argumentum ad nauseam: I agree that repetition is good in an argument i would do that in an argument.

4. Argumentum ad numerum: I don't agree because even if a lot of people support something that doesn't mean they are right. We are humans and we do mistake not because a majority believes in something means they are right.

5. Non sequitur: I agree  with this one you need to have convincing premises in order to have a good conclusion.

Argument

Politicians and some other american citizens complain that immigrants don't bring anything positive to this country. Is that true? First of all lets remember that America was a nation made by immigrants: British, Irish, Germans and many others from different nationalities. So why Americans can't accept immigrants today? That's definitely a great question.

There's a lot of arguments that state that immigrants only bring problems to America. Does that mean that immigrants are responsible for all the problems in this country? Some people argue that immigrants take jobs away from american citizens. Almost all immigrants work in jobs that have the worst conditions, some work in the fields, other in factories or some as construction workers.I'm sure that if someone has the opportunity to go and see for example the workers in the fields you won't find an american there. If you go you will only see Hispanic immigrants who come to work hard to provide for their families. Now lets ask our selves do Americans do that kind of jobs? The answer is no, so why do people argue they take jobs away if they do the jobs that nobody else wants to do. The problem is that something called racism lives and makes people have this attitude and bad feelings towards immigrants.

Immigrants just come to help America, they come with the hope of finding a better live that they can't have in their countries.The immigrants who founded America came with the same hope. Think in California for example their main source of income is agriculture. What would happen if immigrants don't go to work for a day, a week, a month, or a year?That would make the economy go down.They come to help America. Our ancestors who were immigrants came with the same hope and dreams. Hard working immigrants deserve the opportunity to be legal in this country. Lets remember that once we were all immigrants and that this nation was created by immigrants.

Jiro's essay

     Jiro is a person who shows us a lot of good qualities everyone needs or should have. Jiro's sushi is definitely the best in the world and he wants to keep that, and even make it better. This man shows that he has dedication and sacrifice.

     To be successful in what ever you do is necessary to have dedication. Jiro has a lot of dedication. When his restaurants buy fish they just don't buy the first fishes they see, they buy the best ones they can find. Jiro shows dedication when he says he loves his job, his sons have fallow his steps. Even his sons known they won't have the same dedication that their dad has. Jiro is around 80 years old and he still works like a young man. He has all that energy because he has dedication. Everyone who works or provides products for Jiro needs to have dedication. A person without dedication can't work for Jiro he requires people who wants to improve their skills everyday. If someone believes they have dedication seeing Jiro and his workers will let them know what true dedication is all about.

     To be the best at something like Jiro is essential to make some sacrifices. Jiro makes sacrifices everyday he goes to work. He could easily retire but he doesn't because even though he is old he sacrifices because he loves his job. By expecting better results everyday he sacrifices himself to achieve his maximum potential. He expects his sons and workers to the same for them a good sushi is not enough. Jiro doesn't take weekends off or days off, he works as hard as he can everyday. Jiro shows that when you sacrifice you will obtain good results. He also teaches us that we shouldn't have a limit when we want to be good at something. Jiro and his workers are definitely a great example of how sacrifice makes you a better person.

     Jiro doesn't care for money or many other thing you can think. The only things he wants is see his costumers happy. He shows that with dedication and sacrifice you can make a big difference. Jiro is an example for everyone who wants to be successful and master something. 

   

Jiro's sushi

Jiro is a person who works hard to be better in his work everyday and he takes it seriously. If we are like Jiro we would definelty be successful, everyday he tries to improve in his skills. Jiro wasn't born being te best man to make sushi. He worked really hard to get there and become successful. If we want to be successful we have to overcome obstacles and be ready to improve everyday just like Jiro has done over the years. Jiro could easily retire, but he doesn't because he loves his job, if we want to be good at something we have to love it just like Jiro. This man is an example for everyone who wants to succces and be good at what they love. He shows that dedication and hard work are everything you need. He doesn't need a luxury restaurant, he just needs his deditication to make his restaurant one of the best in the world.

Something I've learned

I have learned a lot of things. However i consider responsibility the best thing i have learned so far. Being responsible helps you a lot every time you turn your work, homework, participate you are helping yourself.  If you are responsible you also get trust from others they can be teacher, family or friends. If people around you trust you, is important to know that you will also gain self confidence.
